Men at work - Down under

"Men at Work" is an Australian rock band who achieved international success in the 1980s.
Colin Hay (lead vocalist) emigrated to Australia in 1967 from Scotland.
In 1978, he formed a duo with Ron Strykert, added the drummer Jerry Speiser and Australian progressive rock keyboard player Greg Sneddon to the band that later became Men at Work.

"Down Under" (also known as "Land Down Under") is a pop song recorded by Men at Work for their debut album "Business as Usual" (1981). The song went to #1 on American, British, and Australian charts.

Traveling in a fried-out combi
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,

Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, do you speak-a my language?
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
And he said,

I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.

Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?
And he said,

Oh! do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover.

Colin Hay, the writer of the lyrics, told SongFacts: "The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the over-development of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that."

"It's a very important song for me. It always felt like a strong song, right from the start. Originally, the idea came from a little bass riff that Ron Strykert, the guitar player for Men at Work, had recorded on a little home cassette demo. It was just a little bass riff with some percussion that he played on bottles which were filled with water to varying degrees to get different notes. It was a very intriguing little groove. I really loved it, it had a real trance-like quality to it. I used to listen to it in the car all the time. When I was driving along one day in Melbourne, the chords popped out and a couple of days later I wrote the verses."

Lyric translation

Fried out Kombi - a broken-down van. The lyrics are often translated as "Combie," but the correct spelling is Kombi. It came from the VW Kombivan which was very popular in the '60s and early '70s, especially with surfers and hippies.
Head full of Zombie - Zombie was a particularly strong batch of marijuana which was floating around Australia for a long time. People called it "Zombie Grass."
Vegemite Sandwich - Vegemite is a fermented yeast spread that is pretty much a national institution in Australia. Some people love it and can't start the day without a piece of toast spread with Vegemite, and some go so far as to carry a small jar of it with them when they travel overseas. Some are indifferent to it, and others can't stand it. It kind of resembles smooth black tar, and is similar in taste to the English "Marmite," but Aussies will always tell you that Vegemite is far superior. Regarding the lyrics, "Where beer does flow, and men chunder..." Chunder is Aussie slang meaning to vomit.

It seams the lyrics have many meanings ... enjoy : Down under - wiki, Lyric Interpretations

The place where Santa stops for a beer

Melbourne, 24th of December, evening, no beer in the fridge...

If you are from Melbourne you probably know it's not easy to find a liquor shop or anything else opened on such day, around 9pm.

We were going home, without any hope to find something, when I sow this - Bootleg

This was a double surprise for me : it was opened.... and it has drive thru...
Yes, drive thru liquor shop. Maybe after a while this will be a normal thing, but so far I am used only to the McDonalds drive thru :)

So, I got my Coopers Sparkling Ale and a bottle of wine...

This is maybe the place where Santa stops for a beer...

Merry Christmas !!!

Aussie Zen - She'll be right ....

..........

"You'll basically understand that 'She'll be right' is kind of like its own philosophy about life here (in Australia). It is not an embodiment of the philosophy, it is the philosophy. And if you take the words 'She'll be right' and say them unceasingly to yourself, like a mantra: 'She'll be right; she'll be right; she'll be right' after a while your European obsession with perfectionism and your Germanic obsession with being punctual, and all these kind of fixations, just start to vanish after a while. You'll find they just drop off you and you can go and play your golf and not worry about things, and of course the problem is you'll never be able to go back to Germany, or the States, or Japan, and work there ever again."

Aussie Jingle Bells

Aussie Jingle Bells

Dashing through the bush
In a rusty Holden Ute
Kicking up the dust
Esky in the boot
Kelpie by my side
Singing Christmas songs
It's summer time and I am in
My singlet, shorts & thongs

CHORUS:
OH, JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS
JINGLE ALL THE WAY
CHRISTMAS IN AUSTRALIA
ON A SCORCHING SUMMER'S DAY
JINGLE BELLS, JINGLE BELLS
CHRISTMAS TIME IS BEAUT
OH WHAT FUN IT IS TO RIDE
IN A RUSTY HOLDEN UTE

Engine's getting hot
Dodge the kangaroos
Swaggy climbs aboard
He is welcome too
All the family is there
Sitting by the pool
Christmas day, the Aussie way
By the barbecue!

CHORUS

Come the afternoon
Grandpa has a doze
The kids and uncle Bruce
Are swimming in their clothes
The time comes round to go
We take a family snap
Then pack the car and all shoot through
Before the washing up

New to Victoria - Overseas Driver - Licence (A)

I wrote in a previous post few things about the driving licence, but as I've started the process to get a new driving licence I want to provide some updates and details about the process.

My status so far : I passed yesterday (03.Dec) the knowledge test and the hazard perception test, and I'll have the driving test in January.

When you come here as a permanent resident, for example from Romania, you can drive for 6 month with your licence (6 month since you entered in Australia if you were outside when your visa was granted, or 6 month since the visa was granted if you were in Australia at that time).

There is a list with exempt countries, if you from one country in that list you only need to go and request a Victoria licence without taking any tests, if not, you will need to do some tests.

So, if you are not from one of the exempt countries, you need to book and pass the following :
- knowledge test
- hazard perception test
- driving test
The total cost for these is now (end 2010) around 90$.

The knowledge and hazard perception tests are both on computer.
In order to prepare for it you will find all the information on the vicroads website. For the knowledge test you need to study "Road to Solo Driving handbook" and practice the tests on the Vicroads site (a part of them might be in the real test). You will get questions with 3 answers and only one possible answer.

On the Hazard perception test you will get a situation (like driving ahead, turning left etc), a thing to do (when you would slow down, turn etc) and a video. You need to click the mouse when you would do the action. If it is not safe to perform that action, you should not click until the video ends.

You need to bring with you the following:
- your current driving licence
- an ID document [passport]
- a credit card/debit card/medicare card
- a bank statement or other bill on which you have your current address in Australia

You need to fill in a form with your details (check when you arrive at the testing centre where you can get the form so you can fill it in before your appointment time) and the documents mentioned above are used only to check the details in this form (no copy of the documents is required).

After the tests you'll get the results signed and stamped and you need to bring them with you at the next exam.

Trip - Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick

The 100 acre (39 hectare) site was originally a blue metal quarry which was operated between 1859 and 1976 by the Wilson family who subsequently donated the land to the community.

During early excavations, fossilized forest remnants were uncovered. Later studies found that these fossils indicated that the site was covered with tropical forest 22 million years old and include the earliest known Eucalyptus fossils.

The City of Casey started redevelopment of the site into a botanic gardens in 1988, and the site was officially opened by the Governor General four years later in 1992.

A steep pathway leads to the Hoo Hoo Lookout Tower which has extensive views over the surrounding suburban areas.

Trip - Cape Schanck

Cape Schanck is the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula and separates the wild ocean waters of Bass Strait from the slightly calmer waters of Western Port.

The location have been named after Captain Schanck (Schank), an English Navy captain and contemporary of Matthew Flinders, who was also famous for designing the raised keel used on naval vessels so as to allow navigation in shallow waters. One of the ships, the Lady Nelson, incorporating this design was used extensively in exploration of the southern coast of Australia from 1800.The symbol of Cape Schanck is the Cape Schanck Lighthouse, built in 1859 (the second lighthouse built in Victoria).

Location: 88 km from Melbourne

Melbourne for newcomers (2) - transportation & finding a house to rent

I will cover transportation and finding a house to rent together because I think this will be the next items on your agenda after you'll arrive here in Melbourne : that is - how can I get from A to B and where and how will I find something to rent.

Transportation

Depending on where you are staying at the beginning, you'll have (or not) some public transportation options available.
These might be : bus, train, tram. For all of them you have the same ticket - you can for example buy one for 1 day and not have to worry about where you are going (depending on zones).
You'll see that the tickets will be on zones - that is Zone 1 - the centre of the city and the nearby suburbs, and Zone 2 - other suburbs. The prices at this moment are (a few prices, only to give you an idea) : daily full fare zone 1 -$6.8, 2 hour full fare zone 2 - $2.80, daily full fare zone 1+2 - $10.60. In the train stations or in trams there are automatic machines where you can buy tickets.

It all depends on where you are staying at the beginning. You'll see that in order to go an see some houses to rent, access to transportation is very important (it is always better to buy a car - I'll cover this subject in a future post). As I mentioned in the previous post, South Yarra is a great location for newcomers. You can see in the Melbourne Train Network map here that the South Yarra train station is near to the city loop (the centre) .. and also offers great connections to other areas of the city where you might go later to find something to rent.

Finding a house to rent
This might be the most difficult thing to do for a newcomer, or it can take a while before you'll find a place that you like.
The renting process here is quite difficult : you need to provide references from you previous place, from where you've worked and will work + photocopy of the passports. If you have an account at a bank here you can ask for a bank statement showing the amount of money you have and you can link it to the renting application form.
If you'll have internet connection (I think is necessary to have internet connection where you'll be staying - you'll need it to search for a job/house etc) then you can visit http://www.domain.com.au and search for a house in the suburb you like. This site offers also information about each of the - you can find there a link "Profile" near the suburb name. On the profile page you can find information on the population of that suburb, but also the real estate agents and their addresses. The next thing to do is to check when the inspection will be on the houses you like and go there to see them.
As I saw, the real estate agents are mainly located on the Centre Road of the suburbs (or in commercial centres in the suburbs). The train usually has a station near the Centre Road so one other option is to take the train, get off at the suburb you like, and walk on the Centre Road to find Real Estate Agents offices (please get a map and check first that the train station is near the Centre Road). Some of them also keep "key in office" so you can pick up keys and go to see the house by yourself (you'll be asked for a deposit of $50/$70 and they'll make a photocopy of your passport - and you should be back in 1 hour). Usually the inspections are in the weekend so if you see the house over the week and you like it and apply for it you might be accepted.
Good luck !!

Melbourne for newcomers (1)

Ok, as mentioned on previous posts, we arrived in Melbourne... We've setup some things before and like to share our experience so we'll give an idea to other people that will come to Melbourne.

(1) House / Hotel / Serviced apartment

Before you arrive to Melbourne, in case you don't have somebody to "host" you for a while, you need to organize your initial stay.
You'll see that you have a few options : it is difficult to find a house when you are here... so "remote" it should be much more difficult (in case you don't have a lot of money to buy one) .. so you can search for a hotel or for a serviced apartment.

We've heard about the serviced apartments at Darling Towers in South Yarra :
- they offer serviced apartments in a few locations near City centre.
- the prices seams to be acceptable from what I've found
- the conditions are very good & the position of the apartments is good for a newcomer (that doesn't know the city)
and decided to go there.
We made a reservation for 2 weeks.

Please consider that you need to provide a valid card to do a payment to validate the reservation.

From here (for example they have locations on Darling Street, on Caroline Street) you have direct connection to the City centre using tram 8 (I think it takes 15-20 minutes)

or with the metro at South Yarra station to a few locations within Melbourne (the white line is the tram line and the arrow shows the direction to CBD and the red X is the South Yarra metro station).

You can have also internet connection in this location (it is not so great, but at least you can search for a house or for a job).

Also on Darling Street or on Caroline Street that are a lot of serviced apartments that you can consider.

Preparing to move (1)

(1) Preparing to buy a car & obtaining the Australian driving licence

I'll try to put here all the information that I'll find related to the subject - buying a car / the first car in Australia and obtaining the Australian driving licence.

(1.A) Obtaining the Australian Driving Licence

As I found out, the process of obtaining a driving licence is different from state to state, so what I'll describe here will be related to Victoria.

So... as a general idea, it is better to have a driving licence before you go there - the price for the total number of hours you have to take is high in Australia - so it is better to have it already - this way you'll reduce the number of hours.
In our case this is not a problem as we have the Romanian driving licence and lot of experience here.

A site where you can find a lot of useful information : http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au

I won't go into details with this as additional information on types of driving licences and exam information can be found on the site mentioned above.

(1.B) Buying a car / first car in Australia

For us this is an important item as we are thinking to buy a car when we arrive - in order to be able to move from place to place to find a house to rent.
So I started first to take a look at prices and what car I will be able to buy ...

Some sites I found :
http://www.drive.com.au/
http://www.cars.com.au/
www.carcity.com.au/

I'm thinking to visit the Car City near Melbourne to search for a car - but as I saw there will be a lot of options ... so I have to decide what to look for...

My understanding so far :
- it is better to buy from a dealer

I'll come with updates related to this subject ..

Visa process - additional medical requirements

Few days ago we received the confirmation that the medical checks were processed and completed for my wife and me.
As Stefan is only 2+ years old and only a few checks were done, they asked an additional report : "a current assessment from a specialist Paediatrician and/or developmental Psychologist is required regarding applicant's cognitive and developmental status".
We managed to obtain 2 documents - one from a Paediatrician and one from a specialized development Psychologist and I hope we'll be able to send them this week.

We are waiting now to see what's going to change starting from 1st of July .... A change that might give us problems : the changing of priority ... but I think they'll not come to a conclusion by then :)

Hope to have a CO soon....

In the meanwhile.. one of my worries is the following : few years ago in some countries everybody was talking about the economical crisis but in Romania we heard about it when it was to late to take action (for example to sale the house when the prices where high etc). What will happen in Australia ? ....

Prepare for the journey to a better life

There should be a lot of things you have to consider before arriving in Australia... in our case before arriving to Melbourne (if nothing changes, Melbourne is our destination).

So in order to be prepared (maybe it is late ...? ) here is what I think should be done:

Select the desired destination

- study & prepare a list with Melbourne areas/suburbs
- reduce it to a short list
- for each of them study : transportation (how long it takes to / from etc) , schools, price for rent/buy, crime figures (in my opinion this is related only to statistics ... ), supermarkets, places to visit

A good report might be this one "Where to Live in Melbourne - The Report" :
http://www.anewlifeinmelbourne.com/where-to-live-in-melbourne.html
Maybe I will buy it ...

Other interesting link http://www.melbourne-suburbs.com.au/ and also a PDF map www.dha.gov.au/maps/Melbourne_map.pdf

Prepare to have a job as soon as possible

I think that a good thing to do while waiting for the visa to be processed is to start searching for a job.
A good approach is to search for something that can be done remote and to offer to work voluntary. Maybe this will help as Australian experience and will be much easier to find something there.

Prepare your "exit" from your country

I have had some experience with other countries closer to Romania - it will be difficult when you move to a new home & country if you have here your own house and you know where everything is located. (if you need a hammer, you know where is yours)
So ... it order to be prepared and to have a smooth transition, I think you need to lighten your life here - keep only what you strictly need, don't buy new things that you will throw away (or give to somebody from your family) when you'll leave...

IELTS Results

Finally I got the results from British Council on my IELTS exam :

Initial results :

Listening 7.0
Reading 7.5
Writing 5.5
Speaking 7.0

OVERALL BAND SCORE: 7.0

And after the appeal and 2 months waiting :

Listening 7.0
Reading 7.5
Writing 6.5
Speaking 7.0

OVERALL BAND SCORE: 7.0

I cannot find an explanation on my initial mark on the writing exam.... it's not like they added only 0.5... they added 1 point which is a lot ...

So I have more then 6 on each of the 4 exams. If you have problems I highly recommend to make an appeal.
